Salt In The Wound - A Familiar Face
by Commander Drake Lexon
Blinking his eyes open slowly, Drake lifted his head and looked around. “He’s awake,” said someone, even as Drake realized he was lying on the bridge. A tall man in that black uniform came to stand over him.
“Good,” the man said. “The starbase is starting to wonder why the power’s shut down over here. We need to get underway. Tell Anna.” One of the men headed for the Ready Room, and the man turned back to Drake. “Get up.” With a shrug, Drake stood.
“Who are you?” he asked. “What do you want?”
“I’m Felix,” the man said. “And right now, we want you to get us under way before the starbase sends a team over to investigate.”
“You can’t run a ship like the Avenger with just us,” Drake pointed out. “Especially given the damage she’s received.”
“We have teams in Engineering and other key points around the ship,” Felix said. “We just need your command codes to get us into the systems.”
“And what might be the consequences if I refuse?” Drake asked calmly.
“Let’s just say we have the resources to destroy not only the Avenger, but that starbase and everyone in it,” Felix said with a leering grin. “So, Commander, what’s it gonna be?” In answer, Drake strode to the center of the bridge.
“Computer,” he said. “Activate all systems and release all security locks, authorization Drake-pi-epsilon.” The computer chirped an affirmative, and suddenly the ship rose to full power.
“Excellent,” Felix said. “Alright, everyone, take us out, and be quick about it, before the starbase catches on. You, Commander – go see Anna.” He pointed to the Ready Room, and with raised eyebrows Drake headed over there.
Out of habit, Drake activated the door chime, ignoring the black-uniformed men when they laughed at him. He had no doubt the starbase would soon realize what was going on, but the Avenger was one of the most powerful and fastest ships at dock – it was unlikely they would be able to stop its departure. “Enter,” called a voice, and Drake walked in after the doors hissed open. Seated casually in what was usually Captain Knight’s chair, a young, attractive woman looked up as Drake walked in and the doors hissed closed behind him. “Ah, the famous Commander Drake. I’ve heard so much about what you’ve done.”
“I am not famous, to my knowledge,” Drake replied. “And I seem to be at a disadvantage. May I ask who you are?”
“Sure,” the woman replied with a smile. “I’m Anna. Your daughter.”
