Drake stared at the woman behind the desk. How could he have a daughter? He didn’t even have a wife, and at any rate this woman looked far too old for her to be his daughter. She grinned at him.

“Confused?” Anna asked. “Don’t worry. You see, I’m not from your timeline. I’m from your future – three decades into your future.”

“If you’re from my future, how and why are you here?” Drake asked, remaining calm. Before he could try to undermine these intruders’ efforts, he needed as much information as he could get.

“We are part of what you might call an ‘illegal’ group,” Anna said. “Though of course our illegality is based off of a tyrannical government’s definition. In actuality, we –” She broke off as she ship suddenly shuddered. The comm chirped.

“Anna, we’ve got trouble,” came Felix’s voice from the bridge. “You’d better get out here.”

“On my way,” Anna said, quickly standing. “Come on.” She led Drake back out onto the bridge, where she took the center chair from Felix, who immediately moved to Tactical. Drake took his normal seat at the XO’s position.

“Report?” Anna asked.

“Minor damage, but we got the shields up in time,” Felix said. “They’ve got a couple runabouts after us, but their larger ships still can’t launch yet.”

“Return fire, disabling shots only,” Anna said. Felix nodded and his hands flew over his console. On the viewscreen, phasers lanced out at the runabouts and other shuttles, easily crippling them. “Mr. Thompson, do you have your course laid in?”

“Yes, ma’am,” replied the man seated at the helm. Anna activated the comm in her armrest. “Engineering, status?”

“She’s certainly taken a beating,” came the reply. “But I’ll guess you can get her up to Warp 7 for now.”

“That’ll have to do,” Anna said. “Mr. Johnson, engage.” Drake watched the man’s fingers fly over his board, wondering if the engines would fail again. Ironically, just when they needed to fail, they worked without a hitch.

“Secure from battlestations,” Anna ordered, standing. “Begin what repairs you can, and see if you can’t get that warp drive working better. Drake, in the Ready Room. We’re not done yet.” Not as if Drake really had a choice, but he followed her anyway.

Once they were back in the Ready Room, Anna seated at the desk, Drake reluctantly seated across from her, they began where they had left off. She told him about how in her time, she was assigned as a security chief on a science station. Soon, she discovered that the scientists were creating some kind of virus designed to destroy all biological things but leave non-biologics alone. It was a bio-weapon. Still, Anna did her job…right up until the point the virus began to mutate, getting out of control. She then demanded that they destroy the station and everything on it, but the scientists thought they could contain it. Once containment was breached – one shuttle docking with an outside ship – Anna knew it was too late. Even as the virus spread, Anna and her uninfected men stole a ship and escaped.

For three years, they avoided contact with others, searching for some way to destroy the virus. Slowly, they gained new members, only after ensuring they weren’t infected. Still, they came to realize they couldn’t defeat the virus…at least, not when it was so widely-spread. It seemed hopeless, until the day Anna’s little band came into possession of a ship capable of traveling through time. They quickly made preparations, intending to go back and destroy the facility once and for all.

“If you intend to use the Avenger to destroy that station, Anna,” Drake said, “We will have to stop you.” Anna raised her eyebrows.

“We?” she repeated.

“Yes, we,” Drake said. “I am not the only officer onboard, and no doubt by now the others have realized something is wrong. Soon, we’ll be retaking the ship and taking you back to be arrested.”

“Let them try,” she scoffed. “We’ll hold them off. Now stay here and behave, or I’ll throw you in the brig.” Standing, she walked to the door and left. With a sigh, Drake sat back in his chair and hoped someone else on the ship would be able to offer some resistance.
